NEWLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL

Sitting at the top of Springfield Road, Newlands Primary school was the nearest school to Parkhead Cross.

Built in 1895 it is also one of the oldest buildings in the area and educated generations of families until its closure in197?.  The land was donated by Lord Newlands with instruction that a public school was to be built on the site.

The school also catered for older children until the building of Riverside Secondary School in 1933.

PUPILS ARE PROUD OF THEIR NEW SCHOOL COLOURS

School colours…..gold, red and blue…..were introduced into Newlands School, Parkhead at the beginning of the winter session.

They are now being worn by a large number of the children on socks, pullovers and ties.  A school badge has also been designed, containing the three colours and bearing a shield with the letters, “N.S.”

NOT COMPULSORY

Although the headmaster, Mr Thomas McNaughton is delighted to see so many children wearing them he emphasis that wearing the school colours will not be compulsory.

‘ I am not going to try and force the children to wear these colours on their clothing,’ he says. ‘But I believe they give the child a pride in the school and also strengthen the link between the school and the home.’

‘Before I considered introducing the colours I made sure that the cost of clothing containing them would not be any dearer than ordinary clothing.’

I would like to thank Brian Charlton for all his help and allowing us to use these photos,

In the 1960’s  some pupils had the opportunity to visit Galloway House Residential School  in Wigton  for four weeks. I believe there was a lot of crying from the parents and the children as they left from the school gates, All the children were given a diary to fill in on this adventure. This is a copy of the front, inside, and back pages of the Gallway House diary belonging to Elizabeth Robertson.

I attened Newlands Primary School from 1942 to 1947. The only teacher I can remember was Miss Begg, known to us as Fanny She was a tyrant, but a great teacher who managed to drag her whole class through the qualifying exams with good marks. I lived on Palace St, but went to Eastbank Accadeny in Shettleston rather then Riverside Secondary until my family moved to Pollok a year later and I switched to Shawlands Academy. I was a menber of the 45th Glasgow Boy’s Brigade Company which met at Soulth Shawlands.Church, andi served an apprenticeship as a radio and tv technician with J,S. Denholm Co at Shawlands Cross, until I emigrated to Canada in 1957. Would love to hear from anyone who recognises my name.

Hi Archie, I am Joe Hunter and I lived in 4 Palace Street from 1950 until 1958, first in the “wee hoose” up the back close, then ” 2 up the middle “. Next door to us was a widow, Mrs Martin and her son Henry and on the other side was another Hunter family, Bella and Moses and their children Gordon and Christine, The Owen family and later in that house, the Ness family who were next door to Mr & Mrs Mcleod and their son Brian. On the first floor were the Davidsons and their children Ronnie, Brenda and their elder sister, next door were the Smiths and their son Zander, on the top floor were the Bullochs and their daughter Isobel. David Ness was a runner for the bookie Frank who stood across the road from No 4. In No 10 Ian McFarlane lived, also Ann McLeod, Margaret Burgoyne, Ella Marshall and Joan Tazar. In N0 16 my Grannie lived, Bessie and Tom Bell and my uncle Tommy, The Sneddons lived on the ground floor and next door two up next to my Grannie were the Wylies. Most of us went to Newlands then Riverside although when we moved to Castlemilk I went to Strathbungo. I was in the Lifeboys in the Methodist Church and also in the Church of Scotland at the top of Whitby Street over the railway bridge. My mother, her sister and her two brothers all went to Newlands and Riverside. I dont recognise your name even though it is the same as mine!
I have fond memories of Parkhead, doing the “jumps” in the back courts, where we played wee shops and moshie in and around the midgie bins! Happy days!
      Best Regards
      Joe

        Hi Joe,
I was born in 4 Palace Street on 9th September 1959. We lived on the ground floor, room/kitchen on the right. My dad worked for the gas board and used to park the van outside during the day. I have many memories of playing in the back courts and one of the neighbours having a friendly golden Labrador called Glen. We moved from there to Springburn 1966-67, not sure exactly when.

I went to Newlands in the early 1960s and remember the teacher Miss Bone. The church we went to also had Nelson Gray as the minister. He later went onto the TV. One of the first ministers to do so.

My twin sister and I attended Newlands from 1933 to 1940 approximately. When we graduated we went to Riverside Secondary School. However, war intervened and in 1939-40, we were evacuated from Glasgow to Dumfries.

I attended Newlands School in the 1940s. My first teacher was Miss McQuiston, and the head mistress was Miss Jessie Hosie. I also had Miss Elliot and Mr Imrie. Does anyone remember them? My name then was Irene Gibson, and my grandmother lived at 1358 Duke Street in the bank building on the corner of Duke Street and Gallowgate.
