Tollcross Burying Ground

Tollcross Burying Ground

Tollcross Burying Ground (now known as Tollcross Cemetery) is located at 114 Corbett Street, Tollcross G32 8LG in the east end of Glasgow.  It is said the first burial was in 1897, but records show there were earlier burials than this with James Shaw of Airdrie who died aged 91 in October of 1879.  Earlier records seem to have been lost but it is known that the author of “Wee Willie Winkie”, William Miller is buried in an unmarked family plot against the north wall.  Many propminent people were associated with the land on which the cemetery now stands and many of the prominent people of Tollcross and other areas of the east end of Glasgow and beyond are interred there.  This page will try and highlight those buried there including, prominent people, merchants, the War dead, and others of interest, and the stories behind their lifetimes.

Rev. William McIlquham

The Rev. William McIlquham was the first minister of Tollcross Relief Church.  He was elected on the 2nd of March 1807 and Inducted at Tollcross on the 21st May 1807.  He died 2nd September 1822 aged 53 years.  This tablet was erected on the east wall of the churchyard by the congregation of Tollcross Relief Church in his memory.

Also interred here is his son John McIlquham who preferred to be called Meikleham who died on 16 June 1865.  John was the manager of Clyde Iron Works and built a villa called East Thorn.  After his death the villa was purchased by his employer James Dunlop.

Rev. William Auld

William Auld was the son of the Reverend William Auld, Minister of Sir Michael Street Relief Church, Greenock and was born at Glassford in 1806.  He studied at the University of Glasgow where he was a creditable student, from which he passed to the Relief Theological Hall, Paisley under the instruction of the Rev. Mr Thomson.

The Rev. William Auld was elected minister by a majority of 60 votes on the 21st November 1832 and ordained on 28th February 1833.  He was the third Minister of Tollcross Relief Church.  There was an ordination dinner in the session house, for which the charge was 2s 6d; the elders being free of charge.

His Manse at Parkhead was for many years a busy marrying centre; and on the Friday of the Glasgow Fair and Hogmanay he would sometimes have ten to fifteen couples attending at his house in order to be made happy.

His Jubilee was celebrated on 24th October 1882.

He died at the manse, Parkhead on 17th April 1885 in the 79th year of his age and fifty third of his ministry and was buried in the churchyard behind the vestry in lair number 498.

An obelisk was subsequently erected to his memory by former members and friends of the church resident in the city, in conjunction with a large number of members of the church.  It is of Aberdeen granite, and bears on the east side, in bronze relief, an excellent representation of his features.  His wife lies beside him.  A large family was reared in the old manse.

One of his surviving sons was the Rev. James Auld, who was ordained by The Glasgow United Presbytery (22nd February 1875) as a missionary to Caffraria.  For some years the station at Elujilo was under his charge, but since he laboured at Columba in the same colony.  He was honoured by being chosen moderator of the South African Church.

Rev. George Sharp

George Sharpe was forty when he arrived in Parkhead in 1905. Rev Sharpe was born on 17th April 1865 in Dalziel near Motherwell and became a clerk in Colville’s steel works.  In 1886 George Sharpe moved to New York State to work for the Rose family who had emigrated to New York from Motherwell in 1884 and owned steel works there.  While in New York George became a member of the Methodist Church and later received an offer from his minister to pay for his tuition through college to enter the ministry. On 17th November Rev Sharpe married Jane Brayton Rose, and served in three New York State Churches at this time. In 1901 Rev Sharpe returned to Scotland.  He accepted a call to Parkhead Congregational Church in 1905.  In 1906 Rev Sharpe left the Congregational Church and  formed a new Church.Land was bought in Burgher Street, and a sum of £300 was raised by the time the deeds were ready.  Building of the new Church began in 1907.  Rev Sharpe crossed the Atlantic to raise funds for the building and the new Church opened in December at a total cost of £3,000. One of the teachers of the Church was Miss Olive Winchester, an heiress of the inventor of the Winchester Rifle ,who in 1909 came to Glasgow to further her studies at Glasgow University where she became the first woman to be admitted to the Faculty of Divinity, and is thought to be the first woman to be ordained in Scotland. I would like to thank the Rev Colin Woods and Rev Ian Wills for all their help in this project.

Hi Bob. I’m trying to find my gg grandparents, William Goldie and his wife Jessie (Donaldson) Goldie. William (1835-1907) Jessie Goldie (1841-1907). All I know is that they were buried at Tollcross Cemetery in Parkhead. I do not have their burial dates or locations of their remains. Would you have a record of them in the Cemetery records? Would be appreciative of any information you could relay to me. Thanks!

Lair 113 (Robert Goldie stone) I have not been able to find his wife Jessie Goldie (Maiden name Donaldson) Pretty sure she is buried there as well. Would have been on or near 1915. I’m still searching for her. Hopefully, there’s a cemetery record of her death. Thanks for everything.

I’m looking for any information on whether a headtone still exists for my family who I believe were buried in Tollcross Church Burial Ground. Possibly lair 471, old section. Their name was Forrest and would have been buried between 1880 and 1918 I think. Thanks.

One of their sons James was also buried in Tollcross ( according to his death certificate) he died April 14 1859. I havent been able to find record of James burial or lair.I wonder if you are aware of any more McNaughts buried there. More recent generations were buried in Janefield Cemetery.I wonder if their is a map or diagram showing lair locations in either Tollcross or Janefield. Any help would be much appreciated

5 months later and much digging (not literally) I can answer my own post. My ancestor Eliza ,mentioned before, was a McCrossan and lair 226 was owned by William and James McCrossan. I believe Wm was Eliza’s father. The lair is very large and appears to have 3 sections, with a total of over 40 burials, mostly McCrossans and McNaughts with some other relatives. Among those were Peter and son William Purdon who were killed in an explosion at Beardmores in Parkhead in 1866.Peter was husband of Jenet McCrossan, Eliza’s sister. William had four young children and a fifth born less than two months after his death. Some sad Parkhead history!

I am looking for graves for people in the Corbett family. They were the land owners of Tollcross for about 500 years (ending around 1830). Do you by chance know if there are any Corbett graves in the Tollcross cemetery? I am most interested in finding Cunningham Corbett or Marion (Mariane?) Corbett. Thanks so much!

    Hi Bob,

I’m trying to find information on a couple I think were likely buried in Tollcross in 1893 and 1894 – I put in a request at the Mitchell to look up the records but they tell me the interment records only begin in 1895 so that was disappointing. I can see you’ve been helping people with earlier burials than 1895 so I’m hoping you may be able to help me too. I would be really grateful to hear from you.

I have family resting there and live looking on to the grave yard.
I have been in and removed some rubbish myself but to see chairs and other rubbish not being removed is disheartening.

I have just learned from the death certificate that my 3x Great-Aunt Elizabeth Beg or Boag (wife of James Currie) and who died on 01 October 1859, is buried within Tollcross Burying Ground. Having just visited the cemetery I noticed that almost all the gravestones have dates of death in the 1990’s and that there is virtually nothing relating to the 1880’s. There doesn’t appear to be an ‘old’ section in the cemetery and I would be very grateful if anyone can shed any light on Elizabeth’s resting place.
    Many thanks.

Thank you for your recent comment on the site above.

Your friend Margaret Dudgeon ashes will be at Lair 476 in the Old Churchyard section of the cemetery. Unfortunately the gravestone is almost completely covered by an overgrown bush but the base plinth can be seen with an inscription and John Kent’s name on it.

I have attached an aerial map indicating the area of the gravestone and also a photo of the stone (arrowed).

Your Gran Jane Couston is buried in Section 8 Lair 52.

      The records we have access to show that there are 4 people in the lair;

      1) 23 January 1922 Sarah Ward aged 56 years
      2) 27 March 1933 John Ward aged 71 years
      3) 21 July 1954 John Ward aged 65 years
      4) 1 May 1969 Jane Couston aged 73 years

There is also another Couston grave in the cemetery which may also be your family members. This is at Section J Lair 9 and the stone indicates that interred there is Samuel Couston & and his wife Annie Jessie Duncan and their 2 children Annie and Robert and Robert’s wife Margaret.

Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help. My mum lost her brother aged 13 back in 1944 a Roy McLaren. He was buried alongside his grandparents, George and Rachel Whitelaw. My mum is now 84 and has not returned to the grave for many years, as it is a difficult memory even now, to further compound this the last she visited the gravestone was knocked over and in disrepair. She looked into having it repaired but was never able to have it done. I plan to visit from London at the end of May and we are taking a tour of Tollcross to show me where she grew up. If at all possible it would be wonderful to be able to visit the grave and pay our respects but to do this I’d really to know if the memorials in the cemetery are ever repaired. If not could you point me in the direction of someone who I could speak to who would be able to help assist us in arranging this. if you could you provide me with the contact details of who I could speak to I know it would mean the world to my mum. Many thanks for your kind attention. My very best wishes, Nicola

    Hello Bob,
My name is Anthea Wilkinson and I live in Australia. I have a certificate From the Tollcross Central Church Burying Ground to say that my great grandmother Mrs Mary Nimmo Ralston had the rights of burial to the lair numbered 886 (“Section: – Ground: New”), dated 7th February 1897. The certificate was numbered 3678. I think my great grandmother was buried there in the late 1940s or very early 1950s, and my grandmother Elizabeth Ralston McDowell’s ashes were brought and placed there from Australia by her son in the 1990s. The gravesite doesn’t have a headstone, as far as I am aware. I visited the cemetery in 2013 but was unable to locate the grave. I am returning to visit Scotland in August this year, and I would very much like to find the gravesite and lay some flowers on it to pay my respects. Please, could you help me to locate it.

        Hello Bob,
I have just received your email, and am very grateful for the effort you have gone to in finding and sending all this amazing information about the lair and my family. It is very special to realise that there are so many of my family laid to rest there, and I would be delighted to meet with someone at the Cemetery when I come to Glasgow in August and be shown exactly where the location is. It would be very helpful to have the location pegged out, as I don’t think there is a headstone or anything else to mark the spot. I will find out more about Mary Nimmo Ralston from my mother and let you know what I discover, and I will also get back to you with the dates that I will be in Glasgow and arrange a time to meet at the Cemetary.
Again, many thanks to you and the Parkhead History team for the information and photos you have been kind enough to send us. My mother will very much appreciate all of these.
        Kind regards,
        Anthea Wilkinson

      Hi Sandra,
We’ve sent you an email with the Lair location for Jenny Nyguist Mcfarlane and John Mcfarlane. Jenny (Janet) died 27th January 1960, she was aged 64. Robert McFarlane (widower) was the informant of the death and therefore died after 1960. They were living at 119 Glenshee Street at the time of her death.

What was your mothers fullname and maiden name and when did she die? Where did your grandfather die? a search from 1955 to 1960 shows no results for Rorrison in Lanarkshire.
Can you give more info for your aunt Ella?

I am trying to trace the Jaap family (William and Euphemia (Pearston). The 1851 census shows that they lived at Fore Square, Shettleston, Tollcross. There is no record of them in the 1861 census, but William was deceased by 1862. When his son William Jaap married Catherine McClure. I think that William was buried in the local cemetery and I would be delighted if anyone has any info. Thank you.

I’ve sent you a reply to your email about the headstone but it’s pretty much overgrown and will need a few hours work to fully uncover it but cannot guarantee legibility of it.

My ancestor Robert Paterson Snr of Hamilton Farm purchased Lair 358 at Tollcross Burying Ground in September 1832

A few years ago my Dad and his brother got details of various family members interred there from 1867 – 1877, and then there is a gap and another list starts again from 1884 to 1908.

Would this family grave still exist, and is there any way to find out who it was used for before 1884?

      Hi Helen,

Yes the grave still exists but I’m not sure there is a headstone at it as quite a few have now gone or been toppled. The lair is in the old church yard section of the graveyard.

I’ve emailed you a reply to your comment with further info.

I have the death certificate for my great, great grandfather, Archibald Gray who died in 1857, aged 66 and the burial place is listed as “Tolcrofs” as certified by Edward Marshall, grave digger.
He died in Dalry in Ayrshire but there are family connections with that area, as his son, Andrew is listed in the 1861 census as having been born in Tolcrofs, Lanarkshire.
His wife, Janet or Jane, is listed on his death certificate as deceased, but I can’t find any record of her death. She was on the 1851 census, having been born in Parkhead, so she must have died between 1851 & 1857. They may be buried in the same place.
Have I got the correct burial ground or is there another one somewhere else with a similar name?
I would appreciate any help you can give me.

      Hi William,

I’ve forwarded you the info you require. Your uncle was buried in Tollcross Cemetery on 17 March 1958 in Common Ground Old. Old means the old section of the graveyard I believe which is in the walled section where the original church once stood.

      Hi Marie,

The records that we have seen date from 1879 to 1974 and I’m not sure if earlier records are held by anyone (such asThe Mitchell). I have benn recently informed that the Mitchell digitizing project(s) for their burial records are now nearing completion and could be available soon but how soon, soon is, is anybody’s guess. I’ve sent you further info to your email.

A few years ago whilst researching my Mackenzies, who worked for Colin Dunlop at Clyde Ironworks and buried in Tollcross, I was informed that there are no records prior to 1879. I was lucky in that another am. researcher stumbled across two Mackenzie headstones dating as far back as 1819.

However, since that time, I’m given to understand that the Lair registers dating from the time the Tollcross churchyard was opened in 1807 are on microfilm in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow.

      Hi Rena,

I’m not so sure that the Mitchell has the pre 1879 records but we will know soon as all the Mitchell records are currently being digitised for preparation prior to them going on scotlands people. I believe the scans have been done and are of good quality but all the indexing is outstanding/ongoing.
The records that I have viewed for Tollcross Burying Ground between 1879 and 1974 are held by the Mormon Church of the LDS and need to be ordered for viewing at the Local Family History Centres.
      I’ll email you further details.

On the death certificate of my 4x great grandfather’s sister Susanna Carbans Marshall (nee Leishman), it states that she was buried in Tollcross Burial Ground. She died in 1855.

      Hi Elaine,
1855 is just a little too early for the records we have. I think the records pre 1879 have been lost through the years. The only info on the older dates is from the surviving headstone memorials and if we come across the info you quote we will certainly pass it on.
We have sent you an email with the information we have at present but will update this should we find more.
