Two Famous Boxers Retire
East End Men Who Gained Big Honours
Johnny McMillan and Jim Maharg Make Decision
The time to hang up the gloves has been reached by two noted East End boxers, Johnny McMillan, Calton, and Jim Maharg, Mile- end, who on Tuesday night announced that they had made their last appearance as contestants in the square ring.
At The Same Time
The intimation was made by the two men from the same ring, the Parkhead Arena, after they had taken part in different fights in which both made grand exits.
McMillan beaten after a hard fight, and Maharg the winner, having defeated Garry Roche,Wexford In his third attempt to regain his former title as Scottish feather weight champion, McMillan was beaten by Frank McCudden in the thirteenth round of the final eliminating contest.
The fight itself was the grim story of the clever old hand and vigorous youth, with youth only winning towards the end by reason of the ability to take it and keep going.
In the first few rounds the exchanges were fairly even, but the craft of McMillan could not stem the eager attacks of his opponent.
Although almost knocked out in the sixth round, Johnny recovered and at the half distance was leading by a slight margin.
In the ninth round the beginning of the end was seen, and in round thirteen, after McMillan had been down for three counts, the referee intervened to declare McCudden the winner. McMillan was ten years older than his conqueror.
Ten years ago Johnny, then a champion went to America for further honours. A few years ago he returned, and again reached the top and at one time fought for the British featherweight championship.
It was the hardest of luck that a few days before the fight, with Sailor Watson, actually when he had completed his heavy training, he fell while riding and injured his arm so badly that he could not give his best.
Trained by Mr. G. Aitchison, of Dalmarnock, Johnny also lives him in Bridgeton. His intrest in boxing will continue, as he is a good trade unionist, the Glasgow secretary of the National Union of Boxers.
He has also shares in a East End business.
Jim Maharg is former flyweight and bantamweight champion of Scotland, and is known as one of the finest gentlemen of the Scottish ring.
When he became a professional Jim was an apprentice bricklayer, but even when reaching the heights in his career he remained modest and unassuming and refused to cease serving his time.
Up At Dennistoun
Jim’s folk reside in Wesleyan Street, but since his recent marriage he has lived in Duke Street Dennistoun.

Boxing Carnival At Celtic Park
World Famed Champions To Appear
With The Celts at far away Aberdeen on Saturday, the field is clear for the great Boxing Carnival at Celtic Park in aid of the fund for limbless Heroes.
All the greatest British exponents of the manly art, renowned figures in the ring, will display their prowess with the gloves. A mere glance down the list of champions billed to attend the Carnival.
Not often in Glasgow have we a chance of seeing Jimmy Wilde, Tancy Lee, Bomb Wells, Dan Flynn, Wally Ross, Dan McGoldrick, Sid Shields, Pat Breslin, Johnny Lafferty, and Joe Hendry.
Any two of these pitted against opponents of their own class would draw a crowded house anywhere. But in addition to the great professionals named, the cream of Scotland’s amateur talent will also appear. The sterner battles will be relieved occasionally by comic bouts between Skinner and Baston, the one eyed boxers.
Mr Eugene Cori will act as referee and Mr W White as timekeeper. Sir Arch McInnis Shaw, will take the chair. The band of The Royal Scots Fusiliers will perform. It is hoped that the Glasgow public will turn out in their thousands to assist the very deserving charity for which the Carnival has been organised.
Glasgow Observer 23/3/1917
It is with great sorrow that we have to chronicle the death of Lance Corporal George Barrie, who succumbed to wounds received in his country’s service on 31 January 1916.
By his death the Battalion has lost, perhaps its most promising NCO, for he was a whole-hearted soldier and a keen student of all military matters; and, moreover, full of resource and initiative. These latter qualities, amongst others, endeared him to his comrades, and won him the esteem of all the Battalion. They were outstanding in his civilian days and served to make him a champion amongst boxers and a good, all-round athlete. A clean, fair sportsman, he has played the game well and nobly even unto his death.
As a comrade he was staunch and unselfish, and with a true and brave man’s generosity always considered the needs and weaknesses of his fellows. We miss him sadly and will keep his memory ever green; his personality influenced, his example inspired us.
……….. “the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world,
‘This was a man!’”
